Oh the places you ll go writing paper

Does your family have a lot of traditions? How about secret traditions? One of the cutest and most fun graduation ideas I stumbled upon while scrolling through my Facebook feed last year. I happened upon the suggestion to get your child’s teacher to sign a copy of the most iconic children’s book about graduation, career, and life in general—Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” And, it’s brilliant. This makes a wonderful annual tradition that you do in secret, sneakily getting teachers to sign the book with a special message. An “Oh the Places You’ll Go” Signature Book becomes a gift full of graduation quotes and end of school year thoughts from beloved teachers. Then, come high school graduation or college graduation, you have a truly sentimental gift for your beloved child as they go off on their own into the world.

Somebody, please pass me the tissues. It’s just my allergies, I swear.

Since my plan is to do this every year, I saw an opportunity to optimize. Rather than handwriting a note every year, I created a letter I can just print out, sign, and enclose. It may be a little silly but I’ve penned it in the style of “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.” Feel free to download and use my letter. If you choose to share it, please give credit to my site, www.422Deals.com. That’s all I ask! Happy to help. :))

I’m posting about fun graduation ideas today specifically because I saw that the cost of the book was lower than I’ve EVER seen it. Right now, on Amazon, you can get “Oh the Places You’ll Go!” for just $7.88!! What a great deal! I bought two copies for less than the usual list price of just one copy. (List Price $18.99) If you hurry, you might be able to catch the deal too. Pricing is accurate at the time of this posting, but prices are always subject to change. I’d recommend checking your shopping cart just to be sure. This deal absolutely is one of the best affordable graduation gifts, even if you pair it with a watch or another special present when the time comes.

  2. Keep the envelope it came in, or hide the book inside a mailing envelope.

  4. Write the teacher’s name and grade level on the envelope.
  5. You may also wish to email or contact your child’s teacher privately to give a heads up as well.
  6. Take the parcel to the school’s main office and drop it off.
  7. Be sure to let the secretary know the plan and to keep it a secret from your child.
  8. Wait to hear that your secret parcel is ready for pickup!
  9. Find a safe and memorable place to hide the book until this time next year.
  10. Wash, rinse, repeat. Easy-peasy!

Just buying the book is the absolute first step. I recommend doing the whole thing in secret so your children are surprised when it comes to the day you give them this precious and fun graduation gift. Here are a few tips to make the Oh, the Places You’ll Go Signature Book tradition as easy as possible.

Of course, I still think it’s a special tradition even for an older child, even if you can’t get all the signatures. I’m hopeful one day to have their gymnastics coaches and other key role models sign the book as well. This signature book seems as if it would be one of the best graduation presents ideas that I can start right now. I know I will sit there and bawl my eyes out when we give both of our daughters this book in the future, but in a good way. I’m sure we’ll make so many wonderful memories between now and then! I hope these years don’t fly by too swiftly.

After filling out the writing prompt, glue it to the "basket" of the hot air balloon that you will cut from brown construction paper.

Using a stapler, I attached some string to the balloon and the basket to connect them.

I gave the kiddos some paint and pom poms to paint their hot air balloons with-- a method we haven't done before!

I found a printable hot air balloon template online and printed one for each of my kiddos-- yep, my 3 and 1 year old made their own balloon, too!

Oh-- and we added a picture of my kiddos in each of their balloons, too!

  • hot air balloon template
  • paint
  • pom poms
  • clothespins
  • writing paper
  • construction paper
  • string
  • picture of student
  • glue

Once they dried, I had my son fill out his "When I Grow Up. " writing prompt and then I worked on assembling the hot air balloons.

I tried asking my 3 year old what she wanted to do/ be/ go when she grows up, but all I kept getting was "birthday!"

“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” Dr. Seuss

Today, Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known and loved by all as Dr. Seuss, would have been 111 years old. He died in 1991. In honor of his great contribution to the love of reading for children, the National Education Association adopted his birthday as the National Read Across America Day. It is a logical honor. He wrote 46 books for kids—that they actually like to read! In 1980 he was awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal from children’s librarians

“Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

“There’s no limit to how much you’ll know, depending how far beyond zebra you go.”

Learn Something New Every Day!

Another fun story is what prompted him to write The Cat in the Hat. It happened in 1954, just after Life published an illiteracy report noting that one reason kids were not learning to read was because their reading material was so boring. In response, W. E. Spaulding, the director of the education division of Houghton Mifflin, created a list of 348 words he figured first-graders should know. He then challenged Geisel to trim the list to just 250 words and write a book using only those words to create “a book children can’t put down.” Less than a year later, The Cat in the Hat was ready for publication, using only 236 words. Within its first three years, this little book sold about a million copies. And it has been a favorite of kids around the world ever since.

I am celebrating today by reading Oh, the Places You’ll Go! written by Dr. Seuss in 1990. This was the last book Seuss published. Its main message is to be brave, to get out there doing things, to not let fear and obstacles make you wait, wait, wait. As Seuss concludes, “Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So. . . get on your way!” When initially published, it reached the top of the New York Times Best Selling Fiction Hardcover List. Every spring, its sales surge a bit as the book is given as a gift for many high school and college graduates. All his works offer life lessons that are worth sharing at any age!

Theodore Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904. His early work includes being a teacher, advertiser and political cartoonist, but he is best known as a children’s author. Geisel started using the pen name “Dr. Seuss” while attending Dartmouth College. It’s a fun story. He was caught drinking on campus during prohibition and was ordered to stop working on the campus humor publication called Dartmouth Jack-o-Lantern. Instead, he published under a different name! (No wonder I like this guy!)
