How to write a strategy paper

Students watch a sample of artistic video clips online and respond through creative writing while using the vocabulary words they are currently studying.

The more often students write, the more proficient they become as writers. RAFT is a writing strategy that helps students understand their role as a writer and how to effectively communicate their ideas and mission clearly so that the reader can easily understand everything written. Additionally, RAFT helps students focus on the audience they will address, the varied formats for writing, and the topic they'll be writing about. By using this strategy, teachers encourage students to write creatively, to consider a topic from multiple perspectives, and to gain the ability to write for different audiences. In the book, Strategic Writing, Deborah Dean explains that writing for differing purposes and audiences may require using different genres, different information, and different strategies. Developing a sense of audience and purpose in writing, in all communication, is an important part of growth as a writer.

In this lesson, students use focused prewriting strategies to explore content and ethical issues related to a persuasive assignment.

Students learn that you don't have to raise your voice to raise a point. Writing a persuasive letter to your principal is a great way to get your opinions heard.

  • Role of the Writer: Who are you as the writer? A movie star? The President? A plant?
  • Audience: To whom are you writing? A senator? Yourself? A company?
  • Format: In what format are you writing? A diary entry? A newspaper? A love letter?
  • Topic: What are you writing about?

Students analyze Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne to determine how an author keeps an audience interested by creating voice and to applying that knowledge to their own writing.

What did the wolf think of Red Riding Hood? Once Upon a Fairy Tale offers his side of the story and more, providing vivid examples of how voice enlivens narrative. After comparing versions of the story, students apply the concept of voice to Fractured Fairy Tales and other writing activities.

Poetry and politics combine in this lesson where students write a free verse poem in the voice of Cesar Chavez.

Make the reference list and the in-text citation conform strictly to the style given in the Guide for Authors. Remember that presentation of the references in the correct format is the responsibility of the author, not the editor. Checking the format is normally a large job for the editors. Make their work easier and they will appreciate the effort.

The title must explain what the paper is broadly about. It is your first (and probably only) opportunity to attract the reader's attention. In this way, remember that the first readers are the Editor and the referees. Also, readers are the potential authors who will cite your article, so the first impression is powerful!

  • Avoid crowded plots (Figure 3), using only three or four data sets per figure

    • For chemicals, use the conventions of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the official recommendations of the IUPAC–IUB Combined Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature.
    • For species, use accepted taxonomical nomenclature (WoRMS: World Register of Marine Species, ERMS: European Register of Marine Species), and write them always in italics.
    • For units of measurement, follow the International System of Units (SI).

You can propose present global and specific conclusions, in relation to the objectives included in the introduction

    1. Description of the site
    2. Description of the surveys or experiments done, giving information on dates, etc.
    3. Description of the laboratory methods, including separation or treatment of samples, analytical methods, following the order of waters, sediments and biomonitors. However, remember that most journals offer the possibility of adding Supporting Materials, so use them freely for data of secondary importance. In this way, do not attempt to "hide" data in the hope of saving it for a later paper. You may lose evidence to reinforce your conclusion. If data are too abundant, you can use those supplementary materials.

Be careful with too much detail, though—think about what’s really necessary to describe things. For instance, that wonderful lady might be sweet, kind, gentle, witty, and run a shelter for lost raccoons. But do we need to know that she’s 5’4”, weighs 122 pounds, and has a birthmark on her left cheek? Maybe…but we don’t need to be told all of these things in one sentence like that.

When you’re new to writing professionally, it’s easy to think that you can just get the words on the page and then send your work off to an admiring world. Heck, even if you understand the importance of revisions, you might not know how to go about it—after all, you haven’t developed the robust contacts, mentors, tools, and resources that more experienced writers have.

But revising, editing, and proofreading your work doesn’t have to be hard or stressful.

While proofreading, you might be inclined to rush since you feel that you are about to finish. However, that is a big mistake. Despite the fact that you can see the end coming, it’s advisable to read slowly. That implies seeing each word and processing every sentence. Consider going through the sentences twice to be sure.

    9. Use Specific Language

In the past, many editors and writers swore by the printed page. However, today, it’s not the ideal way of editing—digital tools make it possible to edit faster and more efficiently with a computer.

Learn to use Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function (under Review > Track Changes) to show what you’ve changed in a document. This is especially handy if you decide to work with a professional editor, so that you can both see what changes are being made or suggested and so you can learn from the experience to make your next piece even better.

Once you start to notice your recurring errors, you can start to correct them during the writing process naturally.

Before editing, run spell-check and utilize your word processing program’s grammar checking tool or try a tool like Grammarly. Automated checkers mostly don’t catch everything

Writing an action plan might seem challenging but it’s worth the work upfront to keep yourself focused later on and using a simple framework can help give you clarity. While action plans may differ in terms of tasks and timelines, they generally conform to the same structure and include the same types of information. Create an action plan to help you achieve your goal by following these five steps:

Attainable: Although it is good to set high goals to challenge yourself, making sure they’re attainable will help you achieve your desired progress.

*Current state of our business: Yearly profit of $150,000, four employees and many customer complaints*

For example, if you want to get a promotion, you may have to perform a number of tasks to achieve your goal, such as reaching a performance benchmark or learning a new skill. Learning a new skill is one task that will likely need to be broken up into smaller, well-defined steps. Clearly describe each task to create a plan that will lead you to your ultimate goal.

Why is an action plan useful?

An action plan is a document that lays out the tasks you need to complete in order to accomplish your goal. It also breaks up the process into actionable assignments based on a timeline. A good action plan will outline all the necessary steps to achieve your goal and help you reach your target efficiently by assigning a timeframe—a start and end date—to every step in the process. Depending on your needs and preferences, you can use this document to set single or multiple goals.

Time-based: You should set a specific deadline for reaching your goal, such as increasing your income by 10% within the next 12 months.

For example, if you’re managing a marketing campaign, you will need to find out which of your staff members are strongest in planning, content production, social media marketing and SEO. You should also have the applications and tools for content production, graphic design and marketing analytics.
